ABOUT
Izumi Maekawa (b. 1996) is a composer from Tokyo, currently based in Cologne.
Her music explores the observation of change over time, often drawing inspiration from existing stories and historical artworks. She aims to depict a universal perspective on "basic human nature"—a fundamental essence shared by all people, across all places and eras. While this theme is vast and complex, she believes it is crucial for both performers and audiences to connect with it intuitively.Her works have been performed at various projects and festivals in Japan, Germany, and France by ensembles and musicians such as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Musikfabrik, L’Instant Donné, Ensemble Kujoyama, Ensemble Recherche, Mario Caroli, Toshiya Suzuki, Kazufumi Yamashita, and Tokyo Geidai Philharmonia.She was awarded First Prize at the 92nd Japan Music Competition in 2023 and has been a recipient of the DAAD Art-Study Scholarship (2022–2024) and the Deutschlandstipendium (2024).Maekawa earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in composition at the Tokyo University of the Arts under Prof. Jummei Suzuki. Since 2022, she has been studying instrumental composition with Prof. Miroslav Srnka at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, and also since 2024, she has been expanding her focus to composition with multimedia under Prof. Michael Beil, integrating electronics and video into her compositions.
1996年生まれ、東京都出身の作曲家。
4歳よりピアノを、6歳よりヴァイオリンを始める。東京都立総合芸術高等学校音楽科ヴァイオリン専攻へ入学、同時に学外で作曲を学び始める。その後、東京藝術大学音楽学部作曲科を経て同大学修士課程音楽研究科作曲専攻を卒業。2022年に渡独し、現在ケルン音楽舞踊大学修士課程にて器楽作曲および電子作曲を学んでいる。これまでに、三瀬和朗、市川景之、鈴木純明、ミロスラフ・スルンカ、ミヒャエル・バイルの各氏に師事。
作品は、アンサンブル・ルシェルシュ(独)、アンサンブル・ムジークファブリーク(独)、アンサンブル・ランスタン・ドネ(仏)、アンサンブル九条山、藝大フィルハーモニア、東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団（アンサンブル）などによって演奏され、武生国際音楽祭での新作発表や、公募等で作品が選抜される。
第92回日本音楽コンクール作曲部門にて一位受賞。2022年度DAAD芸術奨学金(修士)奨学生。2024年度ドイツ奨学金奨学生。
