ABOUT
Izumi Maekawa (b. 1996) is a composer from Tokyo, currently based in Cologne.
Her music explores the observation of change over time, often drawing inspiration from existing stories and historical artworks. She aims to depict a universal perspective on "basic human nature"—a fundamental essence shared by all people, across all places and eras. While this theme is vast and complex, she believes it is crucial for both performers and audiences to connect with it intuitively.Her works have been performed at various projects and festivals in Japan, Germany, and France by ensembles, orchestra and musicians such as Trio Xenakis, Tokyo Philharmonic orchestra, Bux Ensemble, Ensemble Musikfabrik, L’Instant Donné, Ensemble Kujoyama, Ensemble Recherche, Mario Caroli, Toshiya Suzuki, Tokyo Geidai Philharmonia, etc.She won the 1st Prize at the 92nd Japan Music Competition in 2023, and she has been a scholarship recipient of the Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists sponsored by the Japanese government (2025–2026), as well as a former recipient of the DAAD (2022–2024) and the Deutschlandstipendium (2024).Maekawa completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in composition at the Tokyo University of the Arts under Prof. Jummei Suzuki. Since 2022, she has been studying instrumental and electronic composition with Prof. Miroslav Srnka and Prof. Michael Beil at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
1996年生まれ、東京都出身の作曲家。
幼少期よりピアノとヴァイオリンを弾き始める。東京都立総合芸術高等学校音楽科ヴァイオリン専攻へ入学、同時に学外で作曲を学び始める。その後、東京藝術大学音楽学部作曲科を経て同大学修士課程音楽研究科作曲専攻を卒業。2022年に渡独し、現在ケルン音楽舞踊大学修士課程にて器楽作曲および電子作曲を学んでいる。これまでに、三瀬和朗、市川景之、鈴木純明、ミロスラフ・スルンカ、ミヒャエル・バイルの各氏に師事。
作品は、トリオ・クセナキス、アンサンブル・ブックス、アンサンブル・ルシェルシュ、アンサンブル・ムジークファブリーク、アンサンブル・ランスタン・ドネ、アンサンブル九条山、藝大フィルハーモニア、東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団などによって、国内外の演奏会や音楽祭、アカデミーで演奏されている。
第92回日本音楽コンクール作曲部門にて一位受賞。2022年度DAAD奨学生。2024年度ドイツ奨学金奨学生。2025年度文化庁新進芸術家海外研修生。
